342 garden leps in a year

8/8/2014

Comments

Exactly one year has past since I logged my first moth-trapping results from my "new" garden in Bergen, western Norway. The garden is placed close to the center of Bergen, and is bordering to Mount Løvstakken. Map in the bottom of the post.
I've trapped moths for as many nights as possible. Note that July is under-represented, as there are only results from a handful nights due to me travelling away on my vacation. 3600 records of 342 lepidoptera species have been entered to the lepidoptera.no database during the last 365 days. Only five of them are butterflies. The rest is split between 191 macro-moths and 146 micro-moths.

Number of Lepidoptera species per month recorded in the period 09.08.2013-08.08.2014
in my garden in Bergen, western Norway.

The year has produced several local rarities, such as a few new species for Hordaland county; Eupithecia dodoneata (Oak-tree Pug), Borkhausenia minutella (Thatch Tubic) and Niditinea striolella (Brindled Clothes Moth). Several other rarely observed species in western Norway are also frequenting the garden.
The site is way better than my former place that is located only 860 meters north of the new garden. At the old site I recorded about 400 species in the period August 2007 to August 2013. The best species diversity was recorded in 2009, when about 280 species were found. July at the former garden gave a total of about 230 species. I guess a one-season July potential in my new garden is about that, meaning the July total could have been doubled with activity in 2014.
